Follow the progress of this large commissioned painting below...
First a wash of burnt sienna on the prepared canvas...

And a layer of local color is blocked-in with thin paint...
 
Next, the painting is raised to work on the bottom half...

Then, the top half is developed... 

Subsequent layers continue to work the whole surface...
